Why are they called screensavers?
Screensavers - Is there something more to the name?
A screen saver is a computer program that replaces the image on a computer screen when the screen is idle, that is, when the computer has not been in use for a certain specified amount of time. In other words, when a preset period of time elapses without any user activity on the computer screen, it triggers off animated images that appear on the screen. These images are popularly known as screensavers.
Why screensavers? The name ‘screensaver’ is derived from the fact that the screen is really being ‘saved’ with the appearance of this preset animation. Older computers experienced something called ‘phosphor burn-in’ when any one image was displayed on their screen or monitors for an extended period of time. This is because most computer screens back then were made with Cathode-ray tubes or CRTs. These CRTs produced an image on the computer screen by emitting a steady stream of electrons at the phosphor-coated screen. If any one image was allowed to remain on the screen for an elongated period of time, the phosphors could get damaged permanently, resulting in a faint image of whatever was left on the screen. You will find that if you were working on a drawing or on drafting the letter, those graphics or the content of that letter would be faintly visible on your monitor like a ghost for the rest of its life. This effect etches the image on the screen and is also known as “screen- fade.”
Enter screen savers. These innovative programs are designed to measure the length of time since you last banged on your keyboard or clicked on your mouse. After the preset length of time has elapsed, the screen saver will trigger off a constantly moving graphical image to replace the static image on the screen. The images initiated by the screen saver are designed to never stay in one place long enough to cause burn-in.
So, this is why screen savers were first created and why they were so called. However, computer technology has come a long way since then and modern CRTs are designed and built using much more advanced technology. Newer CRTs have enhanced phosphor coatings that no longer suffer any kind of ‘phosphor burn-in’. Also, computer images of today are lower contrast than the black and white graphics and text of older machines.
Display panels of laptop computers and LCD monitors are safe from any kind of burn-in process.
Despite not being necessary for practical purposes the popularity of screensavers continues its upward journey unabated. However, screen savers are now used more for fun than for protection. Screen saver developers compete with each other to create screen savers that are the best and the zaniest of them all- and all this just for entertainment purposes. After all, it is certainly far more amusing to watch your screen come to life slowly and steadily with your chosen screen saver rather than watch the text sit there doing absolutely nothing. How utterly boring!
Screensavers have divided computer users into two camps- those who advocate leaving the computer on at all times with the screen saver running and those who argue that screen saver or not, leaving a monitor on is a sheer waste of precious energy and so computers and their screen savers should be shut down when not in use. Admittedly, this is a personal choice and has nothing to do with screen savers per se.
